As India’s aviation and logistics sector continues to evolve, strong leadership, industry collaboration, and innovation remain critical to driving sustainable growth. At the forefront of this transformation is Dr. Vandana Singh, Chairperson – Aviation Cargo, Federation of Aviation Industry in India (FAII), a seasoned industry leader with extensive experience spanning global cargo operations, strategic business development, and aviation logistics management.

Having held key leadership positions with leading international cargo carriers and contributed significantly to industry advocacy and policy discussions, Dr. Singh brings a unique perspective on the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of aviation cargo. In this interaction, she reflects on the defining moments of her professional journey, the evolution of her leadership style, the importance of mentorship, and her advice for the next generation of aviation and logistics professionals, particularly women aspiring to build successful careers in the sector.

Q1. Over the years, you have worked across multiple leadership roles. What have been some of the defining moments in your career journey?

One of the defining aspects of my journey has been the opportunity to work across different facets of the aviation cargo and logistics ecosystem. My tenure with Lufthansa Cargo allowed me to gain deep insights into global cargo operations and strategic market management, while my role at Saudia Cargo gave me exposure to managing international corporate accounts and strengthening business partnerships across regions. Another significant milestone has been taking on leadership responsibilities within industry bodies such as the Federation of Aviation Industry in India, where I have had the opportunity to contribute towards broader conversations around India’s aviation cargo growth and transformation. Each experience has shaped my perspective as a leader and strengthened my understanding of the industry.

Q2. How has your leadership style evolved while working in such a fast-paced and dynamic industry?

The aviation and logistics industry is constantly evolving, which means leadership also needs to evolve continuously. Earlier, the focus was largely on operational efficiency and execution, but over the years I have realised that strong leadership is equally about people, collaboration, and adaptability. Today, I believe in creating an environment where teams feel empowered to innovate, communicate openly, and take ownership. Resilience, empathy, and the ability to adapt quickly to change have become extremely important leadership qualities in such a dynamic industry.

Q3. What challenges did you face as a woman leader in the aviation logistics sector, and how did you navigate them?

The aviation cargo and logistics sector has traditionally been male dominated, so naturally there were situations where establishing credibility and earning recognition required additional effort. However, I always believed that consistency, knowledge, and performance speak louder than perceptions. Instead of focusing on limitations, I focused on delivering results and continuously learning. Over time, these experiences strengthened my confidence and resilience. I also feel that as more women take up leadership roles in the industry, it creates a more inclusive and progressive environment for future professionals.

Q4. In your opinion, how important is mentorship and industry collaboration in shaping the next generation of aviation professionals?

Mentorship and industry collaboration are extremely important because aviation is an industry that evolves rapidly with technology, global trade shifts, and operational complexities. Young professionals need not only academic knowledge but also practical guidance and industry exposure. Mentorship helps build confidence, direction, and leadership skills, while collaboration between industry leaders, institutions, and organisations encourages innovation and knowledge-sharing. Investing in young talent today is essential for building a stronger and future-ready aviation ecosystem tomorrow.

Q5. What advice would you give to young professionals, especially women, looking to build a career in aviation, cargo, and logistics?

My advice would be to stay curious, adaptable, and confident in your abilities. Aviation and logistics are challenging industries, but they also offer immense opportunities for growth and learning. Do not hesitate to take on responsibilities or step outside your comfort zone, because those experiences shape long-term leadership capabilities. For women especially, it is important to believe that they belong in every professional space they aspire to enter. Consistency, resilience, and continuous learning are key to building a successful and meaningful career in this industry.
