A Masterclass in Storytelling and Design at JD School of Design by Vinci Raj
JD School of Design was honoured to be visited by a very special guest, one whose achievements span advertising and filmmaking to design, and therefore indeed a man of very profound faith that “we are all stories waiting to be told.” Vinci Raj shared his journey with the students as he delved deep into the dynamic interplay of creativity and commerce.
The Design Talk, made for the Visual Arts and UI/UX students, surpassed a lecture-it was about pondering how design fills the bridge between art and strategy.
From Advertising Maven to Filmmaking Trailblazer
In a nutshell, Vinci Raj is a testament to power with adaptability and relentless creativity. A creative head for Ogilvy, JWT, BBDO, FP7, and Mudra, he has worked on iconic brands such as Titan, ITC Foods, Wipro, IBM, and MTR Foods.
His contributions have well-achieved a global reputability in terms of advertising, rewarded with Cannes Lion, Spikes Asia, and Kyoorius D&AD amongst others, but Vinci did not shortstop. He continued with his creative reign in filmmaking, designing the first looks for prominent films like Kabali, Kaala, Darbar, and Mundasapatti.
Through rich and varied experiences, Vinci Raj has relived again the very concept of a storyteller.
A Dive into Publicity Design
Vinci Raj was talking about his journey into publicity design; it is an area he really excels at, visual narration that really speaks deeply to audiences.
Discussing Kabali, Kaala, and Darbar as examples, he picked apart the minute detail involved in the first look of a film. From ideation to final output, he believes that one must understand the essence of the film and depict the same to ignite enthusiasm.
Actually, one of the major things that the students learned is that Vinci Raj would tell his clients to use the cultural background of the advertisement or poster. Like in an advertisement, or a poster for a movie, he argued that a good and effective design is when it is emotional or resonates culturally with the audience.
Creativity and storytelling in Advertising and Film
The session with Vinci Raj was a tapestry of insights drawn from his expertise in advertising and filmmaking. He talked about the fluid nature of the creative process, which proved that storytelling is at the heart of both fields.
Students were captivated when Vinci Raj illustrated how publicity design builds the perception of audiences, preparing the minds with anticipation and intrigue before a movie hits the cinemas. The way he incorporates powerful stories through images was inspiring to many as it builds appreciation not only for the design but also for how it can ignite emotions and stir one’s imagination.
Insightful and Interactive Discourses
Vinci Raj ensured that students participated in the discussion, sought questions and voiced their opinions.
Students discussed topics ranging from the psychology of storytelling to the challenges associated with generating designs for multinational audiences and the innovative face of the creative industry. Vinci Raj told the world his candid answers to what these professions bring to pass.
One of the great highlights of the session was the emphasis given to appreciation of art and cinema. He narrated how viewing the critiques of creative products can inspire new ideas for understanding the comprehensive approach to design.
Practical Lessons to Young Designers
The very pragmatic offers from Vinci Raj to the students included actionable procedures for tapping creativity and keeping up with the changing demands of industries: Understand your audience: Design is most effective when it speaks directly to the people it’s aiming at. Design is storytelling. Whether through advertising or film, every design tells a story; find yours.
- Value collaboration because great designs often come from various perspectives; team up with others in order to hone your ideas.
- Stay curious about art, culture, and technology to keep your creative edge sharp.
- Take Risks: Creativity Feeds off Risky Decisions; Do not be hesitant to step out of your comfort zone
